ADCS is responsible for determining the spacecraft’s attitude in space and controlling the satellite’s orientation, ensuring that onboard instruments, antennas, and payloads can accurately point toward their targets. Without ADCS, satellites would not be able to maintain stable attitudes, perform high-precision observations, or complete many critical space missions.

ADCS stands for Attitude Determination and Control System. It is responsible for measuring, calculating, and controlling the satellite’s attitude relative to a reference frame. A complete ADCS system usually consists of three main components:
1、Attitude Sensors
Attitude sensors measure the satellite’s current attitude and provide attitude reference data.
2、Attitude Determination System
The attitude determination system processes sensor data and calculates the satellite’s current orientation in space.
3、Attitude Control Actuators
The attitude control system adjusts the satellite’s orientation through control actuators.
Why Is ADCS Important for Satellites?
Enables High-Precision Payload Pointing
Many satellite missions require extremely accurate attitude control capabilities. ADCS ensures that satellite payloads maintain the correct orientation throughout the mission.
Improves Satellite Mission Performance
The success of a satellite mission is closely related to its ability to maintain the correct attitude. If the ADCS system is unreliable, satellite data quality and mission execution efficiency will be significantly affected.
Maintains Stable Satellite Operation in Space
During orbital operation, satellites are affected by various external disturbance forces. ADCS continuously monitors attitude changes and makes adjustments to keep the satellite operating stably.
Supports Autonomous Satellite Operations
Modern satellites increasingly rely on autonomous operation capabilities. This capability is especially important for CubeSats and satellite constellations because they have limited communication time with ground stations and require greater onboard autonomy.
