ADCS vs AOCS: What's the Difference?

ADCS mainly focuses on spacecraft attitude measurement and attitude control, while AOCS adds orbit determination and orbit control functions based on ADCS.

For small spacecraft such as CubeSats, nanosatellites, and microsatellites, most missions can meet their requirements with ADCS because they usually do not need active orbit changes. Large satellites, Earth observation satellites, and deep-space spacecraft typically use more complex AOCS systems because their missions require orbit maintenance, orbit adjustments, and spacecraft maneuvers.

ADCS (Attitude Determination and Control System) is a key subsystem responsible for determining and controlling the spacecraft’s attitude in space. ADCS measures the current spacecraft attitude, calculates attitude errors, and controls actuators to make adjustments, ensuring that the spacecraft maintains the correct orientation.

Star Tracker Attitude Determination

Main Functions of ADCS

Attitude Determination

Attitude determination refers to measuring the current orientation of a spacecraft in space.

Attitude Control

After measuring the spacecraft attitude, ADCS calculates the required attitude corrections and controls actuators to adjust the spacecraft orientation.

Main Functions of AOCS

Attitude Control

The attitude control function of AOCS is basically similar to that of ADCS.

Orbit Determination

Orbit determination is used to calculate the spacecraft’s current position and velocity.

Orbit Control

Orbit control adjusts the spacecraft’s trajectory through propulsion systems.

For CubeSats and small satellites, ADCS is usually a more suitable choice because it can achieve high-precision attitude control with lower cost and lower complexity. For large communication satellites, navigation satellites, and deep-space missions, AOCS is an essential system because these missions require not only attitude control but also orbital maneuver capabilities.
